FAQ’s Vienna City Card

 

BUYING PROCESS

Step 1: Choose your Vienna City Card type (and Add-Ons)
Choose between 24/48/72h Wiener Linien ticket for public transport and optional additional services such as airport TRANSFER and 24h Hop-On Hop-Off TOUR.
 
Step 2: Buy your Vienna City Card
You can pay by credit card (VISA, MasterCard), KLARNA bank transfer or PayPal.
 
Step 3: Activate/personalise your Vienna City Card - and use it!
When activating (immediately or later), you specify the details of your Vienna City Card (and additional services). 
Activate/personalise now: You know your travel date and know when you want to use the City Card.
Select the card type (App or Print at Home), enter the date when you will be arriving in Vienna to use your discounts and advantages (and additional services such as TRANSFER and TOUR), date and start time when you want to use your ticket for public transport.
Activate/personalise later: You are not sure yet when you will be in Vienna? Just activate/personalise your ticket later. Once you have decided on the time of your arrival in Vienna, either click on the activation link of your order confirmation or go to the direct activation link in the webshop. Activate/personalise your Vienna City Card with your 12-digit order number and last name. Then chose the card type (App or Print at Home) and the time of your arrival in Vienna to enjoy your discounts and add-on services (such as TRANSFER and TOUR). Select the date and start time to use your ticket for public transport.
 
 
Your Vienna City Card is now ready to be used in the period of time you have chosen.
App and Print at Home tickets do not need to be validated.
It is not possible to use a Print at Home ticket in the Vienna City Card app and vice versa - these are different digital ticket types.
Vouchers are not available in our onlineshop anymore. However, vouchers that have already been purchased can be redeemed in of our Tourist Information Points until the end of May 2022. The physical Vienna City Cards must be validated before the first trip.
 
If you buy several Vienna City Cards, keep in mind that only one type of card can be selected per order (Print at Home or App Ticket) and all tickets must be activated/personalised for the same time period. If you want to use different card types or want to use them at different times, please buy them in separate transactions.

 

PURCHASE AND ACTIVATION/PERSONALISATION

 

WHERE CAN I BUY A VIENNA CITY CARD?

In our web shop you can order and buy your Vienna City Card(s). Each order must be activated/personalised with a date for the beginning of your stay.
When activating/personalising the City Card, you can select the following delivery options:
-> App ivie - Vienna Guide (conveniently on the smartphone, already validated) https://www.wien.info/en/travel-info/mobile/ivie-app 
-> Print at Home (already validated, print your ticket at home and use in Vienna)

Online payment options: Credit card and bank transfer
 
You can also buy your Vienna City Card in Vienna in all tourist information offices, in many hotels and in the outlets of Wiener Linien. We would be delighted to inform you if your hotel is one of our sales partners.
 

HOW AND WHEN DO I HAVE TO ACTIVATE/PERSONALISE MY VIENNA CITY CARD?

Every Vienna City Card order must be activated/personalised before use. You can activate/personalise the order immediately after you have purchased the card or later. However, the activation/personalisation must be carried out 6 months after purchasing at the latest. Your discounts in the Vienna City Card Discounts are valid for a maximum of 7 days from the indicated date of arrival. You can specify an exact date and time for the public transport ticket.
In your email with the order confirmation you will find an activation/personalisation link. Details can be found in our step-by-step guide at the bottom of this page "Purchase and Activation".
 

DO I ALWAYS HAVE TO ACTIVATE/PERSONALISE MY ENTIRE ORDER?

Yes. You must always activate/personalise your entire order of Vienna City Cards. It is not possible to choose different activation periods. For example, if you buy 4 tickets, you must also activate/personalise 4 tickets. It is not possible to activate/personalise 2 immediately and 2 later. You need several orders to activate/personalise Vienna City Card (s) for different time periods.
 

CAN I ACTIVATE/PERSONALISE MY ORDER FOR DIFFERENT CARD TYPES?

No, if you want to use different card/ticket types you will have to buy them separately. Each order can only be activated/personalised for the same ticket type (App or Print at Home).
 

WHEN I ACTIVATE/PERSONALISE MY CITY CARD, DOES THAT MEAN I HAVE TO USE THE 24/48/72 HOURS OF THE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION (WIENER LINIEN) IMMEDIATELY?

You can choose the start date and the exact time when you want to use the 24/48/72 hours ticket of Wiener Linien when activating/personalising your Vienna City Card.
The ticket does not need to be validated (App and Print at Home).
 

ARE THE 24/48/72 H TICKETS ACTUAL HOURS OR CALENDAR DAYS?

These are hours. The 24/48/72 hours refer to the validity of the Wiener Linien ticket. It is valid for exactly 24/48/72 hours for the period you selected during the activation/personalisation.
 

WHEN CAN I ACTIVATE/PERSONALISE MY VIENNA CITY CARD?

Each order must be activated/personalised. In your e-mail with the order confirmation you will find the exact date until when activation/personalisation is possible. The activation/personalisation must be carried out 6 months after purchasing at the latest.
When you already know your travel dates and times, you can activate/personalise your ticket immediately. Activating//personalising your ticket in the app ivie - Vienna Guide is possible on short notice as the ticket becomes available in an instant.
 
 

GENERAL QUESTIONS

 

ARE CHILDREN INCLUDED IN THE VIENNA CITY CARD?

Each Vienna City Card 24/48/72 hours includes free travel for public transport for a child up to the 15th birthday or a dog (as soon as your child is 15 years old, you will have to buy a separate ticket).
-> Add-On Airport TRANSFER: 2 children up to the 15th birthday travel for free.
-> Add-On 24h Hop-On Hop-Off TOUR: 1 child up to the 16th birthday travels for free.
 
 

I ACCIDENTALLY HAVE CHOSEN THE DELIVERY OPTION “APP” BUT WANTED A PRINT AT HOME TICKET. IS THERE A POSSIBILITY TO STILL CHANGE THE DELIVERY OPTION?

No, it is not possible to change the ticket type after you have completed the activation/personalisation process. App and Print at Home tickets are different ticket types in our system and therefore it is not possible to change the ticket type or even use both options.
 

WHEN ACTIVATING/PERSONALISING MY VIENNA CITY CARD I ENTERED THE WRONG DATE. CAN I CHANGE THAT?

No, unfortunately it is not possible to adjust the date. We recommend that you activate/personalise it shortly before departure in order to react flexibly to short-term changes.
 

ARE THERE DISCOUNTED VIENNA CITY CARDS FOR DISABLED, SENIOR CITIZENS, STUDENTS OR GROUPS?

No, the Vienna City Card does not offer any special rates for disabled, senior citizens, students or group travellers.
It is not possible to combine a Vienna City Card with other cards such as student cards, “Niederösterreich-Card”, Disability Card or similar. Each discount can only be redeemed once.
 

CAN I USE THE VIENNA CITY CARD TO GET DISCOUNTS WHEN BUYING TICKETS IN ADVANCE AND ONLINE?

Almost all discounts can only be redeemed at the box offices in Vienna. Details on the individual advantages can be found HERE.
 

CAN MY DOG RIDE FOR FREE ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT?

Yes, it is possible to take your dog instead of a child for free on public transport. For more information, please visit the website of our partners at www.wienerlinien.at.

HOW IS MY VIENNA CITY CARD DISPLAYED IN THE APP ivie - Vienna Guide?

If you have selected the delivery option "APP" when activating/personalising your order, you can load your tickets into the app after activation/personalisation by clicking on the link in your activation email. We recommend installing the App ivie - Vienna Guide before activation/personalisation.
Details can be found at the bottom of this page "Purchase and Activation " from page 7, point 7.
 

MY VIENNA CITY CARD IN THE APP SHOWS "TICKET EXPIRED" OR "NOT ACTIVE".

If you have selected a validity period in the future, your Vienna City Card (s) in the app are shown as "expired" or "not active". As soon as the validity period / stay period starts, the Vienna City Card (s) are automatically displayed as a valid ticket in the app.
 

CAN I USE THE WIENER LINIEN TICKETS FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT AND ALL DISCOUNTS WHEN I AM NOT ONLINE?

If you have already added your Vienna City Card to the app, it will also be displayed offline. However, to import your City Card into the app, you need internet access.
 
 

ADD-ONs

WHAT IS AN ADD-ON?

Add-Ons are services that you can book additionally to your Vienna City Card. You have the option to extend the classic Vienna City Card, which gives you 24/48/72 hours of free public transport, over 200 benefits and two different Add-Ons. With the Add-O TRANSFER you can book the transfer from and to Vienna International Airport. With the Add-On TOUR you can book a 24h Hop-On Hop-Off tour.
